Carol Volk's career has followed an unconventional path.
Beginning as a literary translator, she went on to a twenty-five-year career as a U.S. diplomat specializing in political and economic affairs. She has now come full circle, returning to writing full time.
Carol has translated more than thirty books by leading French and francophone authors, with work published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Henry Holt, The New Press, and Harvard, Chicago, MIT, Columbia, and Nebraska University Presses. Her translations have been praised in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, and excerpted in the The New Yorker and elsewhere.
As a U.S. Foreign Service Office, she served in Israel, Italy, Iraq, Morocco, and Washington, working on political and economic affairs, infrastructure investment, economic diplomacy, refugee affairs, and strategic competition.
She is currently completing Crossing the Queensboro Bridge, a memoir about growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Queens and the unexpected path that followed.
Carol lives with her husband in New York's Hudson Valley, where she writes, translates, and speaks on literature and international affairs.
